Lakers Parade Live (KCAL 9) Lakers Parade Live - aired on KCAL 9, Thursday, June 17, 2009. The L.A. Lakers won the NBA National Championship on Sunday night and after the post-game celebrations got dangerous, all eyes were on Figueroa Street. 80,000 people called in sick today in Los Angeles. What is this epidemic affecting our fair city? Salmonella? Swine flu? Chicken Pox? No, it was the Lakers Parade (aired live on several new stations, one of which was KCAL 9). On Sunday night the sounds of rabid cheering could be heard echoing through my neighborhood. I, unfortunately, am more of a live-action sort of girl when it comes to sports and watching them on TV just doesn't keep my attention, but my situation was remedied because the guy three doors down kept me updated with the ups and downs of the game with only a 0.8 second delay. By Monday morning, the stories of Laker victory fever (and the multiple arrests because of it) had everyone talking about what would happen at the parade today. The mayor promised in an interview this morning that no violence would happen at the parade, so all of the parents calling in sick to work could set their worries aside and go ahead and bring their families to the parade, after they called their kids' schools, scoring them a sick day as well. It was also possibly to watch the Lakers parade live on various news and media stations, so the number of people witnessing it was probably scores more than the 95,000 who were expected to turn out for the race, at 11:00am this morning. Apparently people were lining up since before dawn today to attend. The parade started at 11:00 and ended at 1:00, and the man of the hour Kobe Bryant, when asked about whether or not he'd stay on for another season (his contract can be terminated this summer) called L.A. his home, saying that he would stay. Coach Phil Jackson stayed mum when asked the same question, which I'm sure will be the cause of major speculation until more information is released. As for the feared violence - the streets were packed, but peaceful.
