Zanu pf in bid to court MDC over closing private radio stati By Ronny Zikhali Zanu pf in bid to court MDC over closing private radio stations Zanu pf is not going back in its bid to jam SW Radio Africa, Voice of the People and Voice of America’s Studio 7 as it is alleged that MDC is being hoodwinked to accept that these stations are anti- Zimbabwe. This emerged after news that MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai is calling for African Union intervention on the outstanding issues of appointment of provincial governors, freeing of the media space and the position of the central bank governor Gideon Gono. Impeccable sources from inside Zanu Pf confirmed that the issue was extensively debated during a party meeting in the capital, Harare last week. ?The party?s policy making body had an informal meeting where it was almost agreed to take MDC to the task on the issue of closing the external radio stations. The view from most members was that these stations still continue to cast the government on bad light and it would be wise if they are jammed,? said the source. But it not clear whether the meeting had a binding resolution as not everyone was happy with the suggestion. Interestingly, the closure of the stations was even discussed in the Global Political Agreement last year and MDC put its hold that it does not welcome such an arrangement. Presidential spokesman George Charamba is on record as saying that the MDC formations have failed to abide by their honour on a number of issues raised in the power sharing deal including the disbanding of pirate radio stations. “The MDC – T was silent on pertinent issues raised in the deal – among them denouncing illegal sanctions imposed on the country by its western allies, undermining the country’s sovereignty and the disbanding of pirate radio stations,? this is Charamba as quoted in the local press. Since the formation of the inclusive government, Mugabe and Tsvangirai have met for the umpteenth time to resolve these and other outstanding issues, but to no avail. Responding to the meetings with Mugabe,Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai only brushed the issue aside and said it as a ?slow and frustrating process?. Media freedom advocates such as Media Institute of Southern Africa said if Zanu pf is for the disbanding of the radio stations it would spell more than doom for the inclusive government.
